The Issue

Over the past four decades real wages have stagnated while living costs have dramatically increased. Along with housing and healthcare, higher education has gotten drastically more expensive. 30 years ago, a public four-year university costed $3,360 per year in today’s dollars.  Today, that same degree costs more than $10,000 per year. Students have turned to student loans in order to pay for higher education and are left with crippling debt. Today, student loan debt is far beyond $1 Trillion.

I believe that through education, a person can make a better future for themselves and it is the ultimate equalizer. Whether Americans go to college or not shouldn’t be determined by your family’s economic standing and ability to pay. Americans also shouldn’t need to choose between massive student loan debt and a higher education. Many countries around the world guarantee tuition-free college to all of their citizens. We guarantee K-12 and I believe we should expand that to college.
